The lecture, originally given as the keynote address at the 2013 AFL-CIO Conference, speaks to the social and corporate ideologies behind global capitalism, and its impact on the common working person. Please bring a lunch, we will provide the beverages and dessert.

Rev. James Lawson Jr. ’57, was a theology student at Oberlin 1956 when he met Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who heavily influenced his decision to go on to be a committed pacifist, noted civil rights leader, and professor.

Reverend Lawson helped launch the Nashville sit-in campaign that successfully desegregated the Woolworth’s lunch counter, inspiring a new generation of civil rights activists. He continued to work closely with Martin Luther King Jr. on civil rights campaigns, teaching workshops on nonviolence. Additionally, Reverend Lawson has been an outspoken ally to the labor union movement, speaking extensively about labor issues and economic equality.
